Monumento a Colón

The monument in honor of Christopher Columbus (span. Cristóbal Colón) decorates the end of La Rambla in Port Vell (old port). It is positioned at the site where Columbus first reached spanish main land after his journey to discover Amerika, to report to Queen Isabella.

The monument itself though was built only in 1888 for the Exposición Universal de Barcelona and is used as a touristic look-out. You can go all the way up with a lift and will have a stunning and nice overview of Barcelona. Upstairs there is very few space and in addition to the height some people might feel a little weird. The entry fee is not as high as the monument and has to be paid inside the basement to which 2 stairs lead down.

An interesting fact is, that the statue was supposed to point to the ‘New World’ Amerika (the sea) but actually points quite accurate in direction of Columbus’ supposed home-town Genua.
